Frequently Asked Questions
Kosher Wine Basics
Kosher wine is wine produced in accordance with Jewish dietary laws (kashrut). From grape crushing through bottling, it is handled exclusively by Sabbath-observant Jews. All ingredients, equipment, and processes are kosher-certified and supervised by a recognized kosher authority (hechsher).
Mevushal (מבושל) means the wine has been flash-heated or pasteurized in a kosher-approved process. Once mevushal, the wine may be handled or poured by anyone without affecting its kosher status. This makes it ideal for restaurants, catered events, and large gatherings.
Non-mevushal wine has not been heated. These wines are often preferred for their traditional winemaking style and nuanced flavors. Once opened, they must be handled and poured only by Sabbath-observant Jews to remain kosher.
Kosher for Passover wine is produced under additional supervision to ensure it contains no chametz (leavened grain products). While most wine is naturally chametz-free, some year-round processes require special Passover oversight.
Jewish Tradition & Mitzvot
A mitzvah (מצווה) is a commandment or good deed prescribed by Jewish law. There are 613 mitzvot in the Torah, guiding ritual practice, ethics, and daily life. Performing a mitzvah brings spiritual meaning into everyday actions.
Kiddush sanctifies Shabbat and Jewish holidays (Yom Tov) through a blessing recited over wine. Wine symbolizes joy and holiness, helping distinguish sacred time from the rest of the week.
Wine is traditionally used for: - Shabbat (Friday night and Shabbat day) - Yom Tov (Jewish holidays) - Havdallah (end of Shabbat or holidays) - Weddings - Brit Milah (bris)
Jewish tradition associates wine with joy and blessing. The Talmud teaches that sacred moments are marked with wine, making it a symbol of celebration, continuity, and spiritual abundance.
Storage & Serving
You can store wine properly at home by following these simple guidelines: - Keep wine between 55–70°F and away from heat sources - Avoid direct sunlight and strong indoor lighting - Store cork-sealed bottles on their side - Choose a location with minimal temperature swings (closet, cabinet, basement) - After opening, reseal and refrigerate; most wines stay fresh 3–5 days
- Red wine: 60–65°F (slightly cool; refrigerate 15–20 minutes if needed) - White wine: 45–55°F (remove from fridge 5–10 minutes before serving) - Rosé: 45–50°F - Sparkling wine: 40–45°F
